How to Maintain Proper Pool Chemistry

When you buy a pool, one of the first things you’ll need to learn is how to adequately balance pool water chemistry.

The list of benefits of proper pool chemistry is expansive.

You will…

– Protect the health and well-being of swimmers.

– Avoid costly damage and degradation of your pool.

– Maximize the useful lifespan of your pool.

– Create the most enjoyable swimming environment.

– Save money you would otherwise spend on repairs and replacements down the road.

In this blog, we explain the necessary steps pool owners should take to ensure their pool water remains safe.

Pool Water Chemistry Essentials

Follow the steps below to keep your pool water chemically balanced:

Keep up with your pool cleaning regimen. The first step to proper pool chemistry is maintaining a clean, debris-free pool.

Check pH and chlorine levels 2-3 times a week. Certain levels – like pH and chlorine – need to be tested multiple days each week to protect your water from harmful environmental contaminants. Use our FREE water testing app and balancing recommendations to keep your pH between 7.2 and 7.8 and your chlorine between 2.0 and 3.0 ppm.

Test total alkalinity and stabilizer levels weekly. Total alkalinity should stay between 80 and 120 ppm and stabilizer (a.k.a. cyanuric acid) should fall between 20 and 50 ppm. Check these levels once per week with our FREE water testing app, and add the chemical amounts suggested in the app.

Do a shock treatment every other week. By overloading your water with sanitizer, you eliminate contaminants, bacteria, and organic matter that linger after your regular cleaning. Rising Sun Pools carries a variety of shock treatments. Stop into one of our three locations, and we can help you choose the best one for your pool.

Monitor calcium hardness on a monthly basis. Too little or too much calcium can wreak havoc on your pool. To prevent damage, try to balance your calcium between 100 and 300 ppm for fiberglass pools and between 200 and 400 ppm for vinyl and concrete pools.

Check metal levels 3-4 times every year. Copper, iron, and manganese can leave unwanted stains on your pool. Check our water chemistry app for suggestions according to metal type.
