Water-Saving Tips

Water-Saving Tips

Your swimming pool is a huge source of water consumption right in your backyard. There are quite a few ways that you can begin conserving water with your pool or spa. Here’s how you can do your part:

Pool Cover

More than half of the water in your pool has the potential to evaporate within a year if you do not use a swimming pool cover. Using one regularly will reduce evaporation by 90-95%. Besides reducing evaporation, having a pool cover can also reduce the need to use more chemicals, reduce algae growth, and help conserve heat, which can save money on heating costs.

Lower Water Level

Keeping a lower water level will help reduce water loss when people are splashing around in your pool. Keep the water level one inch above the bottom of the pool tile. Try to discourage swimmers in your pool from splashing too much water outside of the pool.

Check for Leaks

There are many ways you can check for leaks. Check for gaps or cracks in the bond beam; check for leaking pipes, valves, and joiners; look for damp spots downstream of the pool; look for loose tiles or cracks, as well as water-saturated soil near the pool, pumps, or pool plumbing equipment.

Backwash Only When Needed

Backwashing does use extra water, so keep your pool and filters clean to reduce the frequency of doing so. Only backwash long enough for the water in the sight glass to run clean.

Reuse Backwash and Waste Water

Collect your pool’s backwash or empty it onto lawns and shrubs, but make sure your landscaping absorbs the backwash before it leaves your property. Check with your city government as it is illegal in some regions to empty pool backwash water into the street or storm drains.

Drain Only When Necessary

If your pool has been maintained properly, you will not need to drain it as much as you may think. Many experts say that pools should only be drained every 3 to 7 years, and spas every three months, depending on how often the spa is used.
