Pool Maintenance for Every Season

Want to ensure that your pool stays in great shape and lasts for years? Seasonal maintenance is your best bet. That’s right, you should still take proper care of your pool even when it is not in use. Here’s what to do during each season:

Winter Maintenance

If you are closing your pool for the winter season, proper procedures must be followed as freezing temperatures can damage pool components if they are not cared for correctly. About a week before you close your pool, make sure the water’s pH is balanced as to alkalinity, water hardness, chlorine, and other elements. Remove all ladders and diving boards, clean them, and put them away in storage. Brush the interior walls and floor with a soft brush. Skim the surface to remove any debris and vacuum. Clean out the skimmer baskets and lower the pool’s water level a few inches below the skimmer opening. Install a winter cover to block sunlight and keep debris out of the pool. Turn off the filter pump and drain it according to your manual.

Spring Maintenance

Before removing your pool cover for the spring, clear it of any leaves or debris that have accumulated on top with a leaf blower or broom. Hose the cover off and let it dry completely before storing it in a cool, dry location. Reconnect the pump and filtration system, scrub the interior walls, and clean the surface of the pool with a skimmer net. If any bacteria or algae have grown, use a chlorine shock treatment. Check that the pool’s alkalinity level is 80 to 120 ppm and test the water’s pH balance, which should be 7.4 to 7.6. Raise the water level to halfway up the skimmer opening.

Summer Maintenance

Staying on top of routine cleaning is especially important in the summer to prevent grime and debris from building up. Skim the surface every few days to remove floating debris and test the chemical levels regularly. Gently brush the sides of the pool to remove residue from suntan products. Clean the strainer baskets weekly and vacuum according to your manual’s instructions. Use a high-quality algaecide and apply chlorine weekly.

Fall Maintenance

Clean fallen leaves out of the pool regularly; you may have to skim the pool every day. Do not allow the leaves to sink to the bottom of the pool as they may stain the pool floor. Clean the strainer baskets regularly and check your pool cover for tears or damage.
