Owning an Above-Ground Pool

If you are interested in adding a pool to your backyard but an in-ground pool is not quite feasible, an above-ground pool may be a better option for you. Although some above-ground pools have built-in systems, they still need some hands-on work to keep them in good condition:

Maintenance Checklist

Follow a daily and weekly pool maintenance checklist to ensure that you are taking proper care of your pool. Daily tasks should include the following:

  • Test the pH level, which should be between 7.4 and 7.6
  • Test the chlorine level, which should be between 2.0 and 4.0 ppm
  • Run the pool filter for 12-18 hours
  • Check the water level, which should be around mid-skimmer
  • Empty skimmer and pump baskets
  • Check filter pressure and pump operation

The following tasks should be completed once a week:

  • Test total alkalinity, which should be between 80 and 120 ppm
  • Skim the surface, vacuum, and brush the pool
  • Properly dose with algaecide, clarifier, and metal control
  • Clean pool deck and surrounding area
  • Add chlorine tablets
  • Backwash or clean filter if the pressure gauge rises 7 to 9 psi

Water Circulation

Above-ground pools tend to have issues with water circulation, allowing algae to breed. This is typically more prevalent in dead spots of the pool, including around the steps, under the skimmer, behind ladders, and in any cracks, crevices, or creases. Improve circulation by installing multi-directional return jets. Keep a pool brush nearby to manually circulate the water as well.

Watch the Walls

Warn guests not to sit on the edges or top rail of your above-ground pool, as it can cause damage and crack or crease the sides. Refrain from allowing children to throw objects or ride bikes around the pool as they could end up hitting the walls.
