Having a pool in your backyard will always have risks, but creating some layers of protection will give you more peace of mind. Your layers of protection may include close supervision, installing pool barriers and alarms, informing your family about basic pool safety, being prepared for emergencies, and more. These are especially important when it comes to young children that live there or may visit. Follow these tips to help create layers of protection around your pool to prevent drowning:

Install Pool Barriers

Install pool barriers such as pool gates, safety fences, power safety covers, and alarms to reduce the risk of anyone drowning in your pool. The ideal barrier will keep a child from going under, over, or through the barrier to get into the pool without supervision. Make sure all pool gates are self-closing, self-latching, and locked. Safety fences should be at least four feet high, if not five. Install an underwater pool alarm that goes off when anyone enters the pool.

Supervise Children

It goes without saying that all children should be closely supervised around swimming pools, hot tubs, or any other body of water. Stay within arm’s reach of young children and non-swimmers. If a child is missing, look for them in the pool first and foremost. Every second counts when it comes to preventing drowning.

Prepare for Emergencies

In order to be properly prepared for emergencies, everyone living in your home should take water safety, first aid, and CPR courses. Keep rescue equipment by the pool, such as life rings, floats, or a reaching pole. Have a phone by the pool with emergency numbers listed.

Pool Rules

Always share the pool rules with anyone using your pool. Rules should include the following: no running, pushing, or diving; don’t go in or near the pool without an adult; if someone is in trouble, get help quick.

No matter how careful you are, accidents can happen. If you are the owner of a pool, you are subject to legal risks. Minimize these risks by following all home pool safety rules, guidelines, and laws for your area. Pool alarms and fences are important because they also protect against uninvited guests. You can be sued even if someone trespasses into your pool without your knowledge and gets injured.
