Stains on your hot tub are not only unsightly, but they can also damage your hot tub. The most common types of stains come from rust, corrosion, calcium buildup, and the typical dirt and grime. These stains, although different, can be cleaned with the same chemicals and by following the same process. Here’s what to do:
In order to remove stains from your hot tub, follow these steps:
Water chemistry is the key to preventing stains from forming in your hot tub. Keeping the proper chemical balance gives stains no chance of forming, but this does not mean that you will never have to clean your hot tub’s shell every once in a while.
Start by adding sanitizer, referring to your hot tub’s manual to determine how much sanitizer you need based on the amount of water in the hot tub. Next, test the total alkalinity and pH. Balance the total alkalinity first; it will usually bring the pH into balance as well, but you may still need to readjust the pH after balancing the alkalinity. Then measure the hardness of the water, or the amount of calcium dissolved in the water. If there is too much calcium, the water may leave a scale buildup stain on the hot tub. If the calcium is too low, you may see corrosion on the shell or the jets. Finally, add stain and scale prevention to your hot tub to prevent buildup and make it easier to clean next time.
While these stains may be harmless, it is never fun to sit in a hot tub that looks dirty. The right materials, a proper water balance, and a good scrubbing can help you prevent hot tub stains from taking over.
