Pool Safety Should Always Come First

Pools are meant to be a place of fun and relaxation, however, key safety measures must be in place in order to keep the whole family safe in and around the water.

Pool safety education is more important than ever. Take action to keep your family safe by following these tips:

Pool Safety Tips

1. Have a designated adult in charge of supervision

This “water watcher” should not be reading, on their phone, or distracted by anything else. Their only job is to watch the children that are in and around the pool area.

2. Install barriers, covers and alarms

It’s easy to think that only a fence or only an alarm will be enough to keep your family safe, but you should have a fence, an alarm, and covers for your pool and spa. Fences should be at least 5 feet in height and should only be accessible by a self-closing, self-latching gate. Make sure that covers are well-maintained and that alarms are in working order.

3. Ensure all drains have anti-entrapment covers

Anti-entrapment drain covers should be installed in pools and spas to prevent hair, limbs, bathing suits, etc. from getting accidentally sucked into the drain.

4. Lock up pool chemicals

Keep all chemicals locked away so children cannot accidentally ingest them.

5. Get CPR certified

CPR saves lives! It’s important to become certified in CPR for both adults and children. Once you have your certification, be sure to renew it regularly to keep your skills sharp.
