How to Get Rid of Hot Tub Odors

If you’ve ever removed your hot tub cover and noticed a foul-smelling odor, it can put a damper on your plans for a relaxing soak. The good news is that hot tub odors are not uncommon and they can usually be fixed easily. Here are some of the most common culprits and how to handle them:

1. The water

Cause: There are a number of water issues that can cause your hot tub to put off an odor. If the pH levels or too low or too high or sanitizer levels are not kept at a consistent level, an odor can develop.

Remedy: It’s a good idea to start by balancing pH and alkalinity levels and shocking the water, but the most effective way to remove a smell caused by water issues is to do a full purge, drain and refill of the tub. We recommend completing this process every few months, even when there is no smell or apparent issue, simply to keep your hot tub in the best working order.

2. The cover

Cause: Spa covers are designed to drain water properly, but over time, they may get waterlogged, becoming a breeding ground for bacteria and mold to form.

Remedy: Take off the cover and move it away from the spa to determine if the smell is coming from the tub or the cover. If your cover is older, it may be time for a replacement. However, if your cover is still new, you can attempt to clean it. Prop it up to let it drain and unzip the openings that hold the foam inserts to air them out. Then, wipe down the inside and outside with cover cleaner and allow it to fully dry in the sun.

3. The filter

Cause: The older a filter is, the more it becomes clogged with oils, minerals and other contaminants, reducing its effectiveness and allowing bacteria and mold to pass through it.

Remedy: If your filter is still new, you should clean it regularly to keep it working properly. Filters should be replaced annually, so if it’s been close to or over a year, it’s time for a replacement.

4. The plumbing

Cause: Bacteria, specifically biofilm, can form in your spa’s pipes. Often, you will not see any signs of this happening before you smell it.

Remedy: The best way to fix this issue is by using a purging solution to clear out existing contaminants, then completely draining the tub and refilling it with fresh water.
