May is National Water Safety Month

As we get ready to dive into summer, we recognize May as National Water Safety Month to remind us of safety tips while swimming and participating in other water-related recreational activities. The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals has teamed up with the National Recreation & Park Association, the American Red Cross and the World Waterpark Association to create an annual awareness campaign to shine a light on best practices for safe aquatic activities.

At Rising Sun Pools, we are committed to helping our customers stay safe while enjoying their beautiful pools and spas. Here are some ideas to help keep safety on the minds of your entire family this month:

Pool and Spa Safety Tips
  • Install a four-foot or taller fence around the pool and spa and use self-closing and self-latching gates; ask your neighbors to do the same at their pools.
  • Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa.
  • Install pool and gate alarms to alert you when children go near the water.
  • Ensure any pool and spa you use has compliant drain covers and ask your pool service provider if you don’t know.
  • Maintain pool and spa covers in good working order.

Learn How to Swim

According to the National Safety Council, about 10 people a day die from drowning accidents in the United States. Learning how to swim will make your time in and around the water a safer experience for everyone. The Red Cross can provide you with swimming skills and water safety training in locations across the Triangle. If you do not own a pool but have a pool membership, we suggest that you consider taking swim lessons hosted by your designated aquatics center.

Encourage Your Children to Take the Safe Swimmer Pledge:

I pledge to never swim alone.

I pledge to never play or swim near drains or suction fittings.

I pledge to always dive feet first.

I pledge to obey the pool rules.

After your child takes the Safe Swimmer Pledge, download this certificate and place it somewhere visible in your household to serve as a reminder for your child.

At Rising Sun Pools, we are proud to participate in National Water Safety Month and want to emphasize the best safety practices in and around your pool or spa. Did you know that we offer an electrical safety inspection for all of our customers? This test ensures that your ladders, rails, water, lights and any other conductive electrical pool equipment meet safety standards. For other questions or concerns on how to make your pool or spa safer, contact our team of highly trained professionals. We hope you have a safe and fun swimming season!
