Quick Tips for Cleaning Your Hot Tub

A small amount of hot tub maintenance can go a long way, especially as the nights get colder in the Triangle! 30 minutes to an hour each month is all it takes to keep your hot tub looking, and performing, at its best!

Step 1: Keep your Hot Tub Covered

This isn’t as much of a cleaning tip as it is a good rule of thumb. Keeping your hot tub covered is a great way to keep out debris, shade your tub from the sun and, ultimately, extend the useful life of your spa.

Step 2: Clean Your Cover

Keeping your hot tub cover clean does more than impress your guests! Removing grime and debris will ensure that your cover remains in great condition so that it can continue to protect your hot tub. Hot tub covers are relatively simple to clean:

1. Remove the cover
2. Spray down with a garden hose
3. Scrub with dishwashing soap and a soft bristle brush
4. Rinse with garden hose
5. Dry with a clean cloth

Step 3: Clean Your Filters

Filters are one of the most important parts of your hot tub system. They ensure that your water is free of sediment and other deposits, as well as keep dangerous grime out of the inner workings of your hot tub system. You should clean your filters every 3-6 weeks, and replace your filters at least every other year. Cleaning your filters is easy:

1. Place spa in hold mode
2. Remove your filter, filter cartridges and any associated caps and fasteners
3. Spray filtration material with a water hose
4. Reinstall cartridge and resume your spa system

Step 4: Drain and Clean Your Hot Tub

You should change out the water in your hot tub every 3-4 months. December is a perfect time of year in North Carolina for changing hot tub water because, while we get our cold days, you can usually find a warm weekend afternoon for outside work. To change the water in your hot tub:

1. Identify where you’d like your water to drain into your yard
2. Turn off power to your hot tub
3. Attach a garden hose to spout and run to your drainage area
4. Remove drain
5. Replace all parts
6. Clean the inside surface with dishwashing soap or spa cleaner and a damp cloth
7. Rinse well and allow to dry
8. Refill your hot tub
