What Not to Do at the Pool

While you may be pretty familiar with the basics of water safety, everyone could use a reminder every once in a while. Regardless of if you are relaxing on the pool deck or swimming laps, it is important to know what not to do around the pool. Here are a few tips to remember:

Don’t Swim Alone

Even if you are an adult, it is best not to swim alone. While taking a few laps around the pool alone may seem like a great way to clear your head, you should always put safety first. Always swim with a friend in case an emergency were to occur.

Don’t Ignore Bad Weather

Light rain may not be much of a threat when you want to go for a swim, but you should never swim during a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms bring lightning along with them, and you face the risk of getting electrocuted if you are near water when lightning strikes. If you hear thunder or see lightning, it is time to get out of the water and head indoors.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

You should always wear sunscreen outdoors, whether the sun is shining bright or hiding behind the clouds. Don’t tell yourself that the pool water will just wash it away; you will need to reapply throughout the day to prevent sunburn.

Don’t Let Children Swim Unattended

Never let children play in or near water without an adult paying careful attention close by.

Accidents happen to even the best of swimmers, so be sure to pay close attention, even if they are wearing floating gear.

Don’t Push

Even if you are just playing around, you should never push or pull someone into the water. They may hit their head or injure themselves in another way, or they can end up inhaling water. Some people may not be able to swim or have a fear of water. Children should never be thrown into a pool when they are not expecting it.

Don’t Use Electricity

Never use electricity around water, whether it is a swimming pool or just a small bathtub. Do not use any appliance or device that requires plugging in to an electrical outlet when you are around water. The device could fall in and electrocute someone.
