Tips for Enjoying Your Hot Tub in the Winter

While swimming season has ended for now, the winter months can be a great opportunity to take advantage of spending time in your hot tub. The combination of cooler temperatures and warm water can be relaxing, especially when you follow these tips.

  1. If you’ll be using your spa when it is icy outside, be sure that there is a clear path from the house to the hot tub, to prevent you from slipping and falling when getting in or out of the tub.
  2. Before getting into the tub, prep for getting out by setting out a robe, towel and slippers to use immediately upon exiting the tub. This will help your body better manage the difference in temperature between the water and the air outside.
  3. Don’t be tempted to overheat the water. No matter the time of year, the water in your spa should never be hotter than 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. Keep your soaks to 15 minutes or less. If you stay in the water too long, you could experience dizziness or lightheadedness.
  5. Enjoy a warm drink while you soak, like a cup of tea or hot cocoa. However, avoid drinking alcohol while using a hot tub, as it can increase your risk of dehydration.
  6. Lessen the effects of the cold air by warming your towel or robe in the dryer for a bit before your soak. Or, purchase a towel warmer to keep near your tub so that your towel is perfectly toasty when you’re ready to get out.
  7. While it might sound like strange water attire, wearing a hat while you soak can help keep your body temperature better regulated by keeping your hair dry and preventing heat from escaping through your head.
  8. As always, remember to keep your water properly balanced and to follow hot tub safety guidelines year-round.
