How to Keep Your Hot Tub Free of Foam

There are few things more relaxing than a nice soak in a bubbling hot tub. However, when your spa goes from bubbly to foamy, it’s time to take action.

What causes foam to appear?

One of the biggest causes of foam in a hot tub is contaminants in the water. The most common hot tub contaminants are soap residue, lotion, skin oil, laundry detergent and hair or makeup products. Too many, or incorrect, chemicals in the water can also contribute to the production of foam in your spa.

When these contaminants are in the water, they attach to the bubbles, causing the water to become too thick, resulting in foam.

How do you get rid of foam?

The first thing to do when your hot tub becomes filled with foam is to test the water to check alkalinity, pH and sanitizer levels. This is also a good time to test for total dissolved solids (TDS), which is caused by an overload of chemicals in the water over time.

The most direct way to get rid of the foam is to drain the tub completely and refill it. If you’re unable to drain it immediately, another option is to use an anti-foam chemical. Remember, however, that this is intended as more of a quick fix rather than a permanent solution.

How can foam be prevented?

One of the easiest ways to prevent foam from forming is to take a shower before soaking to remove chemicals on the skin, soap residue, etc. Also, try to keep your hair out of the water by not going underwater and securing long hair with a tie or cap. Instead of washing bathing suits with detergent, simply rinse them with water to keep them clean.

Draining the tub and cleaning it completely a few times a year will also help to reduce the chances of foamy water. Additionally, be sure to always use the correct chemicals to keep the water properly balanced.
