How to Prep Your Hot Tub Before Going on Vacation

Few things in life are more exciting than going on vacation! However, as a hot tub owner, you may be hesitant to go out of town and leave your spa unattended. Fortunately, there are some things you can do before you leave to help ensure that your hot tub will be in good working order upon your return. Follow these tips to give you peace of mind and the ability to fully enjoy your trip out of town.

1. Test the water balance

It’s important to test your water before heading out of town for an extended time. Based on the results of the water test, add the appropriate chemicals to increase the acidity or alkalinity of your water. Maintaining proper water chemistry helps to minimize bacteria levels in the water.

2. Adjust the temperature

An easy way to take advantage of energy savings while you’re out of town is to adjust the water temperature in your hot tub. After all, there’s no reason to pay to heat the water when you’re not there to enjoy it! When you’ll be out of town for several days, lower the temperature by about 10 degrees to save on energy use. Just remember that you will have to allow some time to raise the temperature back up before using it once you get back.

3. Give it a quick clean

Before leaving, it’s a good idea to clean your filter to prevent any issues from happening while you’re gone. Use a garden hose to remove dirt and debris from the filter easily. You should also take the time to clean your cover by using a spa cover protectant on the top and a garden hose to rinse off the underside.

4. Lock the cover

Don’t forget to double check that your spa cover is locked before heading out of town. It helps keep your hot tub free of debris and bacteria and safe from any inclement weather that may occur while you’re gone.
